This is a great place to look at some interesting and different fruit. The smell of fresh mangoes is overwhelming. Also, you need a fresh fruit shake! |

It might be strange to review a fruit stand on the pages of ScienceFamily.com, but Robert is Here is a great stop if you are traveling in the area.
The story of Robert is Here began in 1960 when Robert's dad sent him out to sell extra cucumbers on the corner. By age 14 Robert owned 14 acres of land to grow fruit on to sell at his stand. He is still on the same corner.
The piles of fresh fruit are amazing. Being from Michigan, we had never seen many of the more unusual fruits Robert sells, and we had never smelled a pile of truly fresh mangoes. One of the things we like to do on trips is eat local foods. Robert is Here was a great place to try a bunch of new things.
Robert specializes in mangos and avacados, but there are many other great things here. He sells a variety of heirloom tomatoes that he classifies as "ugly." Other fruits of interest were mamey sapote, tangerines, limes, key limes, and coconuts. Some of the coconuts are in icewater, and they will drill a hole in them so you can put a straw in and drink the milk. The raw sugar cane was pretty fun too.
Behind the stand there is a small zoo of animals. A visit to this area will allow you to see emus, goats, chickens, parrots, and donkeys just to name a few.
One of the best things at Robert Is Here is the honey tasting area. If you have never tried different honey varieties you have to do this. The stand has about 50 different types of honey that are sold there, and each one is available to taste test. The difference between clover honey, tupelo honey, and avacado honey is absolutely amazing. I can't say I liked every one, but the experience is not to be missed. We ended up buying some key lime honey (everything is better with a little key lime added!)
Robert is Here is alos famous for fresh fruit shakes. We tried a few of them. My favorite was a blend of cherries and key lime. The mango was also good. A trip to Robert is Here to get a shake is definitely recommended. I also liked the dried mango slices that they sold.
Robert still works here, and so do many members of his family. They are not only a great source of information about the fruit, but also about the local area. They told us that we could not leave the area without going to Royal Palm in the Everglades, and they recommended a few restaurants. They were freindly, available, and easy to talk to.
All in all, Robert is Here is a great stop for a family. Fruit, vegitables, plants, and animals all fit the science label. The food is good, the people are nice, and the experience is great. While you are there, have a shake for me. I wish I had one right now.
Additional Reviews:
Dad: The heirloom tomatoes (ugly) are out of this world. My favorite shake was a mango/keylime combo.
Mom: We used this stand to stock up on fresh dried fruit for snacks. The selection and quality were incredible.
Will: The animals out back were a lot of fun to look at, especially the emus, but the shakes and the honey tasting were my favorites.
