Whale Watching
"The fin whale made a u-turn and started coming right toward us. When the motor stopped, we knew they were not straying off course. Then came the miracle....Thud!....Clink! The fin whales had come up to and nudged the boat. With another meteoric splash and a breath the fin whales disappeared. They appeared again forty-five feet away, all in three seconds. After a long playtime, they dove down for a bedtime snack.
Speaking of bedtime...it’s getting late for us too. As soon as I think we should be heading home, the captain reads my mind and we head for home. It has been a day of miracles beyond belief because whales are truly mother nature’s perfect children."
This is how Will shared the experience of whale watching in Tadoussac with his classmates.
Additional Reviews:
Dad: This was by far the best day of whale watching we have ever had. Tadoussac is very unique in that it is a place whales come to binge for the summer. A naturalist told us that the fin whales will at least double their weight by the end of the summer. We stopped counting at 10 whales, but we had many encounters with the same whales. Most of the whales we saw surfaced at least 3 times. A mother fin whale and her baby swam straight toward the boat and did not submerge until they were within 20 feet of us. We could look into their huge eyes. There were very few spans of more than 5 minutes when we were not viewing whales.
It is also a great place to see the whales because the St. Lawerence River is about 10 miles wide here, so it takes very little time to get to the whales. There are many trips per day, and the early day reports can give you a pretty good idea of what you will be seeing on your trip.
We took one of the Zodiac tours. I highly recommend paying the extra money for this type of boat. If we were in the big boats we would have never had the experience of being eye to eye with these majestic creatures. Make sure you check with the company if you are taking young kids. Some of the Zodiac boats have age requirements; some have height requirements for younger kids. If your heart is set on doing the Zodiac tour, please plan ahead.
Will: An extra bonus for being the young one is that I got to go to the front of the Zodiac. This is the best viewing spot, and it is reserved for kids who are short enough for the captain to see over. Everyone else in the family had to choose a spot along the side of the boat.
